Hippocampus
The
Hippocampus is a mythological creature shared by
Phoenician and Greek mythology. It is typically depicted as a
horse in its forepart with a coiling, scaly, fishlike hind-quarters.
The horse appears in Homeric poems as the symbol of Poseidon,
whose chariot was drawn over the surface of the sea by swift horses.
In Hellenistic and Roman imagery, however, Poseidon (or Roman Neptune)
often drives a sea-chariot drawn by hippocamps.
