International Conspiracy of
Abstraction
The Central Intelligence Agency of
the USA used abstract expressionism as a cultural weapon against the Soviet
Unions Social realist art because in its vigour and freedom of gesture
it would appeal to Soviet youth. The Soviet bureaucracy tended to
see rock-and-roll, beat poetry and modern art in general as bourgeois decadance
which could undermine commitment to socialism.
We on the other hand do not recognise
the use of abstraction as either a bourgeois cultural weapon or as decadent.
Abstract art as frottage, decollage, expressionism, psychedic, or rave
or hallucinogenic and visionary material is a key factor in cultural liberation.
The hypocritical use by the C.I.A of the U.S.A of abstraction as a cultural
weapon and its devaluation in the Soviet Union as decadent are not part
of our agenda. As agents of international abstraction we offer liberation
from the representative, Freedom for the mind to wander.
