Hybrids: Minature Costumes & Chimarae
I’ve never been one for origami. Seriously, little pieces of paper
folded into a flower or sailboat? What’s impressive about that? If you
want to get the full experience, head to Dover Street Market and check
out its fantastical Hybrids exhibition. Artist Polly Verity has created
a miniature zoo of mythical creatures out of folded paper. A harpy’s
hair blows silently over her pleated wings while a translucent-winged
gryphon prepares for flight. (So she might have used wire to make their
skeletons, it still boggles my mind.) Concurrently, antique collector
Emma Hawkins and costumier Anna Cocciadiferro have created tiny period
costumes intricately made from the remnants of Victorian specimen boxes
like snake scales and butterfly wings. Sewn with tweezers, the clothes
can be taken off and on the mannequins, but there’s certainly no way
I’d dress my doll in them. / Ru
